Northwood La Belle Cranberry Opalescent Ribbed Lattice Celery Vase Victorian

  

Here is a beautiful example most likely produced by the Northwood glass company of Wheeling, West Virginia around the turn of the 20th century. Some records even state that earlier examples exist, produced by the La Belle Glass Co of Bridgeport, Ohio.

Regardless of the company of origin, this attractive pattern has become extremely tough to find in the marketplace today, especially in the cranberry opalescent color. Vertical ribs circle the vase with a white opalescent lattice pattern covering the outside and terminating in a center area of what I believe to possibly be a polished pontil. The vase stands just under 6" tall and spans 3 1/2" across the top. In factory, original condition showing no post factory damage or repairs. I will mention and as pictured, minute nicks on the upper rim most likely caused when the rim was ground at the factory after removal from the mold.

I also pictured a dark ash incision in the glass itself. This visible line extends about 2 down from the rim.

These ash inclusions were common during this time period as the factories were usually unclean and ash particles embedded in the liquid glass. Still an attractive and scarce opalescent piece.
